William Gene Hauenstein, age 83, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at his residence.
Mr. Hauenstein was born on February 15, 1940, to the late Laurence and Susie (Anson) Hauenstein in Huntington, IN. He married Patricia Jean Petre on August 29, 1964. His wife survives and resides in Huntington, IN.
Gene graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1958. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana State University in 1964 and his master’s degree from Eastern Michigan in 1971. Mr. Hauenstein was an elementary school teacher in the Flint, MI, area for 12 years and taught in the Huntington County Community School System for 23 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington, IN. He was also a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity, Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Elks Lodge.
Gene was an avid gardener, even though he didn’t eat vegetables, he enjoyed giving them away. He loved to mow, was a trivia guru, a practical joker and a very dedicated grandpa that enjoyed going to his grandkid’s activities. He loved vacationing in “God’s Country” in Leelanau, Michigan.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, Mr. Hauenstein is survived by one son, Kyle W. (Rhonda) Hauenstein, Fort Wayne, IN; one daughter, Karla J. (Patrick) McEvoy, Mattawan, MI; one sister, Mary Lacey, Huntington, IN; four grandchildren, Nicholas Hauenstein, Natalie (Ryan) Walker, Morgan McEvoy, and Griffin McEvoy.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, John L. Hauenstein and Fred H. Hauenstein.
To honor the wishes of Gene there will be no services.
A private burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to either of the following: Huntington County Humane Shelter, Alzheimer’s Association or to the Donor’s Choice in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN.
