Thomas Allen McElhaney

Thomas Allen McElhaney, age 82, of Huntington, IN, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the Heritage of Huntington.

Mr. McElhaney was born on April 25, 1941, in Huntington, IN, to the late Donald Allen and Helen Louise (Weaver) McElhaney.  Tom married Janice Ellen McCombs on June 25, 1961, in Huntington, IN, and she survives and resides in Huntington.             

Mr. McElhaney was a 1959 graduate of Huntington High School.  He graduated from DePauw University, Greencastle, IN, in 1963, with a bachelor’s degree in music education and received his master’s degree from Ball State University in 1964. He was a member of the Phi-Mu-Alpha Music Fraternity during college.  He was also a member of College Park United Brethren Church in Huntington and a former member of Evangelical United Methodist Church where he served on church boards and was Choir Director for 21 years.

Mr. McElhaney was a Band Director for 32 years in the Huntington County Community School Corporation and retired in 1996. Prior to his retirement he and his wife were owners of Korner Kupboard in Huntington.  Tom was well known for his beautiful woodworking and made many pieces of furniture. He and his wife closed Korner Kupboard in 2009. He was also a member of Gideons International and a former 65-year band member and past band director of the Erie Band.   He was also a former Board of Director for the Huntington Children’s Choir.  Tom and his wife enjoyed the summers at their lake cottage and after retirement, winters in Florida traveling to various state parks in their RV.   Tom was known to ride over 1,000 miles each winter on his bike while in Florida. Tom and Janice loved traveling and visited all 50 states and 12 countries.

Along with his wife, Janice, he is survived by two sons, Douglas (Jeana) McElhaney, Michael (Christi) McElhaney; one daughter, Barbara (John) Young, all of Huntington, IN; 12 grandchildren; Lindsay (Collin) Snyder, Brittany (Daniel) Korff, Carley (Kyle) Platt, Andrew (Kaitlyn) McElhaney, Courtney (Collin) Wesco, Lindsey Scher (fiancé’ Lucas Newsome), Jack Young (fiancé Jaclyn Boyd), Mitchell McElhaney (fiancé Julia Simpson), Graham Scher, Brant Young, Ross Young, Quinn Young; and three great-grandsons, Keaton Snyder, Isaiah Platt and Warner Wesco.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, John Steven McElhaney.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street Huntington, IN.

Additional calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m. at College Park United Brethren Church, 1945 College Avenue, Huntington, IN  46750.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
