Shirley M. Brown, age 94, formerly of Huntington, IN, passed away at Morristown Manor, Morristown, IN, on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Shirley was born on December 5, 1930, in Sioux City, IA, to the late Joseph and Amy D. (West) Peiffer. She married Phileve Brown on July 28, 1947, in Onawa, IA, and he preceded her in death on November 26, 1976.
Shirley was a 1949 graduate of Onawa High School in Iowa. She received a Nurse’s Aid Certificate while living in Sioux City, IA. Shirley and her husband came to live in Huntington in 1953 and she worked at several places including Wabash Magnetics, Huntington Memorial Hospital (Now Parkview Huntington Hospital), the YMCA, Mary Kay consultant for 12 years, and at Walgreens for 10 years as a Cosmetician. She also enjoyed volunteering at the front desk at Parkview Huntington Hospital after retirement and enjoyed being the Past President of the Parkview Hospital Guild for a year. Shirley was also a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and Past President of the Huntington Chapter of ABWA (American Businesswomen of America), Kilsoquah Chapter for 8 years, and past president of AARP.
Shirley received the Woman of the year for ABWA in 1977, 1988, 1990 and 2002. She also received the Den Mother Award in 1964 from the National Council of Boy Scouts of America.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Gary (Katrina) Brown, Greenfield, IN, Dennis Brown; one brother, Tracy Herbert Peiffer, Interlochen, FL; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Tommy L. Brown; and four sisters, Vonda Yanak, Margaret Wyland, Betty Kent, and Tressia Buchanan.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 12:30 p.m., at McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN, with Pastor Jim Splawn officiating.
The family is asking that no flowers be sent but instead to please consider donating to the Library at the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) which Shirley was very involved with and loved supporting.
