Roberta Meitzler Obituary

Roberta M. Meitzler, age 88, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Stillwater Hospice, Fort Wayne, IN.

Roberta wrote the following information….

(Roberta came into this world on September 29,1935. She was born to Phillip and Hilda Young and was the 2nd daughter of the family.

She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church all her life. In second grade, she made her First Holy Communion.  She was selected to crown the Blessed Virgin at the May Celebration in middle school. She was always so proud to have been chosen. While in High School she started working during the summers at Our Sunday Visitor as Monsignor Convoy’s secretary. She graduated as salutatorian of her class in 1953. She continued at OSV after completing high school. She had a great love and respect for her boss, and even enjoyed trying to learn Spanish unsuccessfully.

Roberta met Eldon while in high school at the local skating rink. Eldon played basketball and made Roberta very proud when he won the free throw shooting award. They started planning their wedding after they graduated high school. They also bought their first home, which they fixed up to their liking. They married on August 25, 1956. She was surrounded by her wedding party which consisted of 5 bridesmaids. The entire wedding was perfect, and it was the start of a beautiful marriage.

Shortly after, Eldon and Roberta left for Kentucky because Eldon was in the service (Army). They lived in a small trailer, but it was full of love. After their time in the service, they moved home. While Eldon was busy in the Army, Roberta enjoyed swimming at the pools on base.

After 5 years of hoping, they started their family. Philip Eugene was born first followed 13.5 months later by Joseph Edward, followed 13.5 months after that by Michael Allen, and finally came David Robert 3 years thereafter. She said life was lots of fun with her five men. When the boys started school, Roberta worked at Huntington Catholic School as an instructional assistant for nearly 26 years. Most of her days were spent with first grade students. She loved their innocence and eagerness to learn. While the boys were in school, Roberta was den mother for several years in the cub scouts. She was an active advocate for Right to Life. Through the years the family spent a lot of time with Eldon’s parents and his three sisters. Eldon’s mother taught Roberta to garden, and she always had a passion for it. His father showed her how to play euchre and she always had a great time playing with him and the many family members through the years.

The boys all got married to great girls Tami, Lisa, Julie, and Sherry. She has been blessed with 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Eldon preceded Roberta in death on Christmas day 2021. They had been married for 65 years. She says that her entire life, she loved Eldon and missed him dearly after he was gone. She attributes a lot of her beautiful life to Eldon and the family they made together. She thanks God for all the wonderful things she was given in her lifetime.)

Roberta is survived by four sons, Philip (Tami) Meitzler, Fort Wayne, IN, Joseph (Lisa) Meitzler, Middleburg, FL, Michael (Julie) Meitzler, Bluffton, IN, David (Sherry) Meitzler, Roanoke, IN; 10 grandchildren, Danielle ((James) Higgins, Meagan (Jay) Richardson, Allen (Katie) Meitzler, Brittany (Cody) Thorne, Heather (Justin) Zagora, Jessica  (Joe) Anderson, Mitchel Meitzler, Ryne Wemhoff, Tyler (Taryn) Wemhoff, Grant Meitzler; and 17 great-grandchildren.  Roberta is also survived by three sisters, Mary Dolores Passino, Fort Wayne, IN, Patricia Schwartz, The Villages, FL, and Debra (Kim) Hildebrand, Huntington, IN.
