Patricia Jean (Petre) Hauenstein

Patricia Jean Hauenstein, age 82, of Huntington, IN passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.

Mrs. Hauenstein was born on April 19, 1942, to the late Lawrence and Margaret (Welches) Petre in Huntington, IN. She married William “Gene” Hauenstein on August 29, 1964.  He preceded her in death on November 9, 2023.

Pat was a 1960 graduate of Huntington Catholic High School.  She received her Bachelor of Science from Huntington College in 1964 and her M.A. from Eastern Michigan in 1972.  She was an elementary school teacher in Flint, MI, for 12 years before returning to Huntington and retiring in 2001 from the Huntington County Community School Corporation after 25 years. She went on to tutor at Huntington Catholic School for 4 years (where she had begun her own educational journey many years before).

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Huntington County Retired Teachers Association, and the Delta Gamma Society International. She was awarded “Outstanding Classroom Teacher” in 1992 and the “President’s Award for Outstanding Educator” in 1994.

In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her family, volunteering at The Forks of the Wabash, tutoring at the library, researching genealogy, shopping for bargains, but most of all, attending her grandchildren’s activities alongside Gene and capturing the cherished memories in the many scrapbooks that she lovingly created.

Pat is survived by one son, Kyle W. (Rhonda) Hauenstein, Fort Wayne, IN; one daughter, Karla J. (Patrick) McEvoy, Mattawan, MI; four grandchildren, Nicholas Hauenstein, Natalie (Ryan) Walker, Morgan McEvoy, and Griffin McEvoy; two brothers, Fred Petre, Martinsville, IN, Ron (Deb) Petre, Winchester, CA; and one sister, Susanne Wilson, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas (Marge) Petre.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 10am to 11am followed by the 11am Mass of Christian Burial all at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN, with Fr. Tony Steinacker presiding.

A private burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
