Mary Ann Bernadette (Homan) Young

Mary Ann Bernadette (Homan) Young, age 83, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her family.                                              

Mary Ann was born on June 25, 1939, in St. Anthony, OH, to the late Joseph and Apollonia (Stammen) Homan. She married John “Jack” Bernard Young on February 7, 1969, at St. John’s in Fort Wayne, IN. He preceded her in death November 11, 1979.

Mary Ann held degrees in Education from Huntington University, Indiana University and Edgecliff College in Cincinnati. She taught school at St. Theresa in Fort Wayne, Huntington Catholic School, and Pierceton Elementary. She was also a licensed Radiological Technologist. She was employed for 20 years at Parkview Huntington and various hospitals in Ohio and Indiana.  After retiring, she volunteered over 1500 hours at Parkview Huntington Hospital and various schools in Huntington County. Mary Ann was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was an active member with the Rosary Sodality and helped coordinate funeral dinners.

Mary Ann loved helping everyone and was such a giving person; however, her proudest moment was being a grandmother!  She loved spending time with her grandchildren watching sporting events, concerts, shopping with them and taking them to movies. She enjoyed family vacations, traveling with her nieces, and you could always find her outside working with her flowers. 

Mary Ann is survived by her two sons, John (Barbara) Young, Huntington, IN, Thomas (Beth) Young, Noblesville, IN; one daughter, Mary (Clint) Gradeless, Huntington, IN; one sister, Bernice Frey, Osgood, OH; in-laws, Pat Homan, Roberta Meitzler, Patricia Schwartz, Deb (Kim) Hildebrand, and Dolly Passino.  She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Jack Young, Melanie Gradeless, Brant Young, Kate Gradeless (fiancé’ Clayton Johnson), Ross Young, Evan Young, Will Gradeless, Quinn Young, Bennett Young, and Silas Young.

Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Hilbert Homan, Zeno Homan, Donald (Marilyn) Homan; and four sisters, her twin, Joan (James) Pleiman, Delores (Don) Replogle, Lillian (Orlie) Flatt, Jean Homan; mother and father-in-law, Philip and Hilda (Edel) Young; and in-laws, Walter Frey, Stan Passino, Phyllis (Lynn) Paul, Frank Schwartz and Eldon Meitzler.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN.

Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN, with Fr. Thomas Zehr presiding.   

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
