Mary K. (Ernst) Couch

Mary K. Couch, age 87, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2025, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Mary was born on April 28, 1937, in Huntington, IN, to the late John James and Sophia (Eckert) Ernst.  She married Allen LeRoy Couch, Jr., on September 4, 1965.  He survives and resides in Huntington, IN.

Mary graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1955.  Mary worked at Sealtest, Pathfinders, and Service America before being a homemaker for her husband and 6 kids and sometimes helping out with neighboring kids.  She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Huntington.  Mary loved to quilt, garden, fish, and spend time with her children and family.

Mary is survived by her husband Allen, her children Julia Couch, Wabash, IN, Peter Couch (Michele Henderson), Karen Whitesell (Mark Whitesell), Jennifer Szelis (Todd Szelis), all of Huntington, IN, Maria Sopik (Bret Sopik), Fort Wayne, IN, and Patricia Baumgardner (Tony Baumgardner), Huntington, IN; her grandchildren Brittany Solomon, Casey Fischer (Mikel Fischer), Logan Baumgardner (Mya Houston), Travis Szelis, Daniel Pursifull (Hanna Pursifull), Justin Szelis, Joey Sopik, Jacob Szelis, Lucas Sopik, Katherine Baumgardner and David Baumgardner and great-grandchild Seth Pursifull.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Ernst and James Ernst. 

Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. followed by the calling hours from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN 46750.

Additional calling hours will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN, with Fr. Tony Steinacker presiding.

A private burial will be at a later date at Gardens of Memory, Marion, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
