John P. Overman, 94, of Huntington, Indiana, passed away on his birthday, Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Heritage Pointe of Huntington, IN.
Mr. Overman was born on October 3, 1927, in Wabash, Indiana, to Raymond J. and Zoe L. (Layden) Overman. His parents preceded him in death. John married Mary Lou Christman on April 19, 1952, in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Huntington, IN. She resides in Huntington.
John graduated from Bippus High School and played basketball for the Bippus Tigers. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served during WWII. He served aboard the USS PCS 1386 in Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba. He was a member of St Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Post #160, Roanoke, IN, and VFW Post #2689.
John worked on the railroad for more than 40 years as a fireman and engineer. He started out on the Erie Railroad as a fireman on steam engines. He was employed by the Erie Railroad, then Erie Lackawana Railway and finally Conrail where he retired in 1989.
Along with his wife, Mary Lou, he is survived by one son, Thomas G. Overman, Huntington, IN; three daughters, Stephenie (Stephen Taylor) Overman, Reston, VA, Julie (Bruce Dewar) Overman, Leesburg, VA, Jacqueline (Warren) Myers, Huntington, IN; three grandchildren, Ryan Denbo, Kristen (Justin) Bischoff and Evan (Holly) Myers; six great-grandchildren and one sister, Sally B. Hipes, Suwannee, GA.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Overman and one sister, Jean E. Bishop.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, October 6, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, Indiana 46750, with recitation of the Rosary at 9:00 a.m. at McElhaney Hart Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
The family respectfully asks that individuals wear a mask for all the services on Wednesday.
Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, Indiana.
