Dr. John David “Dave” Carnes, age 71 of Huntington, IN, passed away Thursday, March, 9, 2023, at Stillwater Hospice, Fort Wayne, IN.

Dr. Carnes was born on October 9, 1951, in Huntington, IN, to the late Richard and Mary Lou (Dennie) Carnes. He married Janice Stone on July 26, 1975 at St Mary Catholic Church, Bristol, IN.  She survives and lives in Huntington, IN.

Dr. Carnes was a 1970 graduate of Huntington North High School. He received his BS from Notre Dame University in 1974 and his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University Medical School in 1978. He completed the Fort Wayne Medical Education Program Residency in 1982. He joined Family Practice Associates in Huntington in 1982. He retired from Parkview Physicians Group in 2018.  He also served as the medical physician for Victory Noll Sisters for several years.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church Huntington, IN.  Dr. Carnes was a member of Knights of Columbus 1014 Huntington, IN., and The Cosmopolitan Club.  He served on several Board of Directors in Huntington; First Federal Savings Bank, Pathfinders, Huntington Memorial Hospital 1986-1994, Parkview Hospital, and Huntington County Historical Society.  He was a Life Member of the Academy of Family Physicians and an Volunteer Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine from 1993-2017

Dr. Carnes and his wife Jan met Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 2001.  He loved watching and attending the Cincinnati Reds baseball games, and University of Notre Dame- football and basketball games. He enjoyed golfing with friends and sports of all kinds. He was an avid reader, enjoyed being with friends and talking with people and he loved being a part of the Huntington Community.

Dr. Carnes is survived by his wife Janice, and one daughter, Colleen (Britany) Carnes, West Lafayette, IN; two brothers, Thomas (Carol) Carnes, Huntington, IN and Samuel (Lori) Carnes, Kansas City; two sisters, Mary Ann (Jerry) Swinehart, Avon, IN and Becky (Tom) Smith, Plainfield, IN., and 8 grandchildren.                          

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Michael Carnes on December 15, 2015.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N Jefferson St, Huntington, IN 46750                          

Additional calling hours will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023, from 10:00 am. to 11:00 a.m.  St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN  46750.

Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Multiple Myeloma Foundation, Huntington Community Foundation, Parkview Foundation, Huntington Co Baseball and Cancer Services of N.E. Indiana in care of McElhaney-Hart/Deal Rice Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN, 46750.
