JoAnn E. Hammel, 78, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Stillwater Hospice in Fort Wayne, IN.
JoAnn was born on March 9, 1945, in Huntington, IN, to the late Donald and Eileen (Karst) Swoverland. She married Rex M. Hammel on April 18, 1964, and he preceded her in death on January 13, 2014.
JoAnn was a 1963 graduate of Huntington Catholic High School and a life-long member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Huntington. She had worked at Lincoln Life, Family Practice and Huntington Tractor Sales. JoAnn was a volunteer at school and her church’s food pantry, The Open Door and was a member of the Rosary Sodality and “Doorkeepers” at St. Felix Monastery. JoAnn was first and foremost a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her hobbies were travel, sewing, crocheting and working in the yard.
JoAnn is survived by two sons, Jeff (Marie) Hammel, Andrews, IN, Chad (Nan) Hammel, Huntington, IN; two daughters, Michelle Hammel, Warren, IN, Heather (Matt) Eckert, Andrews, IN; two sisters, Janet Ormsby, Markle, IN, Judy (Jim) Myers, Tucson, AZ; and 9 grandchildren, Jarod (Emily) Hammel, Jamon (Lindsay) Hammel, Hayden Hammel, Isaac Brown, Emily Nielson, Brandon (Hannah) Eckert, Nicole Eckert, Amara Eckert, Josie Eckert; and 9 great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death one sister, Jean Conner.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2023, followed by the calling hours from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home 715 N. Jefferson St. Huntington, IN.
Additional calling hours will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN with Fr. Tony Steinacker presiding.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
