Jim Dinius Obituary

Jim L. Dinius, age 90, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at The Waters of Huntington.

Jim was born on March 4, 1934, in Huntington, IN, to the late Justin and Catherine (Schwartz) Dinius.  He married Rita Reinhart on July 16, 1955, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Huntington, IN. She survives and resides in Huntington.

Jim was a 1952 graduate of Huntington High School.  He joined the United States Air Force and served from 1955-1959 and was a train engineer at Nellis Air Force in Las Vegas.  Jim retired from the Conrail, previously Erie Railroad as an Engineer in 1996 after 49 years of service.  Jim also worked for Hart Funeral Home then later McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home parking cars during funerals and visitations. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, past Secretary and Treasurer of the Moose Lodge, a Huntington Metro Kiwanis member where he served as President, and past Lt. Governor of Wabash Valley Division, a member of Brotherhood Locomotive Engineer’s Division 221 in Huntington and a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus Council #1014. Jim and his wife Rita were also active volunteers for many years at Riley Children’s Hospital. Jim enjoyed doing woodworking in his free time.

Along with his wife Rita, of 69 years, he is survived by four sons, Roger (Tracey) Dinius, Huntington, IN, Mike (Jeannie) Dinius, Indianapolis, IN, Scott (Carla) Dinius, Erlanger, KY, Kevin Dinius, Indianapolis, IN; two daughters, Cindy Farthing, and Pam (Jim) Lewis, both of Huntington, IN; and one sister, Judy DeLuca, Huntington, IN. Jim is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Brian Miller, Jeff (Stephanie) Miller, April Miller, Dustin (Alyssa) Dinius, Dale (Hannah) Dinius, Sarah Dinius, Jason (Jerrica) Lewis, Josh Lewis, Stacia (Tony) Bollinger, Katelyn Dinius and Anna Dinius; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sharon Rethlake.

Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry Street, Huntington, IN.

Calling hours follow the Rosary on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by a 12:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial all at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry St., Huntington, IN, with Father Tony Steinacker presiding.

The burial with military rites will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Riley Children’s Hospital, or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
