James K. Gordon

James (Jim) K. Gordon., age 85, passed away in Tampa Florida August 04, 2024.

Jim was born on December 16, 1938, the son of William Stout and Laura Catherine-Kenner Gordon.

He graduated from Huntington High School in 1957 where he lettered in football. He was a 1961 graduate of Indiana University and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1969. While attending Indiana University, Jim was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and on the Dean’s List for academic achievements. 

He was a Military Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  Jim completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Indiana University Medical Center.

In the 43 years of his medical career, he practiced in Indianapolis, IN, Houston, TX, Vero Beach, FL, Marianna, FL and Sarasota, FL.  Additionally, he was an assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine as well as the University of Texas School of Medicine in Houston.  Jim was a past president of the Florida Panhandle Medical Society and a member of a number of medical associations, including the Florida Gastroenterology Society.

Jim had a thirst for knowledge, always wanting to learn something new about science, nature and animals.  He loved his children and was supportive and encouraging throughout his life. He took special delight in telling  stories and a good joke.  After a successful medical career, Jim was able to enjoy his retirement by focusing on his love of photography, traveling, and being a beloved “popa” to his grandchildren.

Remaining to cherish Jim’s memory are his daughters, Catherine A. (Brent) Balch of Tampa, FL and Amy C. Gordon of Kristiansand, Norway, his son Jason L. (Lori) Gordon of Sarasota, FL., and his grandchildren Claudia Balch and Celia Balch of Tampa, FL, Marcello Cortese of Kristiansand, Norway, and Sophia Gordon of Sarasota, FL .

A brother Bill passed away in Huntington, August 3, 2024.

A private graveside ceremony will be held at a later date.
