James Bowman Obituary

James Arthur Bowman, age 85, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at his son’s residence.  Jim was born on June 24, 1940, in Huntington, IN, to the late Earl Bowman and Katherine Lowman.  His stepmom was Mary (Starbuck) Bowman Bragg.  He married Mary Helen Wehr on February 20, 1966, and she survives and resides in Huntington.

Jim was a 1958 graduate of Huntington High School and proudly served in the United States Army National Security Agency while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. He worked at International Harvester for 19 years, built ambulances in Decatur for 5 years and retired from the Huntington County Highway Department after 17 years of service.  Jim attended Evangelical United Methodist Church in Huntington and was a member of the American Legion Post #85.

Jim was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America and coached his son’s sport activities. He was involved with Huntington CB Radio Club (CB Handle – Bluegill),in the early 1980’s. He was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed diving into genealogy.  He loved his grandkids and attending their activities, his two grand dogs and a special mention to “Hey You”.  He loved to garden, plant flowers and trees and cactuses.   He will be greatly missed by his family.

Along with his wife, Mary Helen, he is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Bowman, Roanoke, IN; one son, David (Heather) Bowman, Huntington, IN; one brother, Frank (Deb) Bowman, Huntington, IN; three grandchildren, Makayla Bowman, Nathan Bowman, Addison Bowman; and Goddaughter, Heidi Strobel.

Along with his parents and stepmother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Bowman; sister, Marsha Sands; and two infant sisters.

A private family burial will be at Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Parkview Hospice or Evangelical United Methodist Church  in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN.
