Eugene Spencer, age 72, of Huntington, IN, went to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully at home on Monday, October 9, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Eugene was born on December 19, 1950, in Jackson, KY, to the late Carl and Pearlie (Smith) Spencer. He married Debra Miller Rice on October 16, 2000, who survives and resides in Huntington. Eugene was the youngest of 13 siblings and 10 of his siblings preceded him in death. He was able to visit with both surviving siblings in the days before his death.
Along with his wife, Debra, he is survived by one son, Timothy Spencer, Huntington, IN; one daughter, Angela Spencer, Atlanta, GA; step-daughter, Dawn (Jeffery) Mitcham, Huntington, IN; step-son, Scott (Holly) Rice, Roanoke, IN; one brother, Curtis Odell (Roslyn) Spencer, Fort Wayne, IN; one sister, Tishie Storms, Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren, Kendra, Kelsey, Madison, Nicholas, Gracie, John Michael; and 5 great-grandchildren, Aydan, Elijah, Elias, Miles and Liberty. Eugene is also survived by his former wife and friend, Carolyn Bennett, Huntington, IN.
Eugene was a graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, Kentucky. He spent 23 years at Dayton Freights, and served the community he loved as the Roanoke Town Marshal and worked security at the Huntington County Courthouse. Eugene was a dedicated member of the First Freewill Baptist Church where he served the congregation as the music coordinator. Eugene was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, #77.
He loved his family and friends, his congregation, and his dogs (Becca and Brandy) who brought him joy and love during his life and in his time of illness. Eugene’s hobbies included singing the gospel, fishing, and playing his guitar. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in support of the First Freewill Baptist Church and/or the Huntington County Humane Shelter to celebrate Eugene’s life, in care of McElhaney Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN, 46750.
We invite the community to celebrate his life with calling hours to be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at First Freewill Baptist Church, 1805 Salamonie Avenue, Huntington, IN, 46750.
Additional calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., prior to the funeral service held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at First Freewill Baptist Church.
Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
