Claris E. (Meyer) Schurz

Claris E. (Meyer) Schurz, age 93, went to her eternal rest on Tuesday evening, March 29, 2022 in Huntington, Indiana. Claris was born on January 23, 1929 near Wauzeka, WI. to Viva

(Richmond) Meyer and Clare C. Meyer.

 

She graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1946, and married Lawrence Schurz on Sept. 25, 1946, and they spent 68 years together. They started their life together in Prairie du Chien, WI and then moved to his uncle’s dairy farm near Wauzeka. They then moved to Hollywood, FL where Lawrence worked as a carpenter with one of his Marine Corps buddies until returning to Wisconsin in 1954 to his uncle’s farm when Claris’s Mother became ill. They bought a dairy farm in Rewey, WI in 1960, where they raised registered Holsteins until selling the herd in 1988. Claris then went to work at Lands’ End in Dodgeville, WI, for 15 years, retiring at 75 years of age.  Claris was a true homemaker. She loved gardening, canning, baking and sewing. She was a wonderful cook. We always had fresh baked bread, cookies, cakes and pies. She especially enjoyed teaching the girls of the Lucky Star 4-H club how to sew. She made a lot of our clothes for us, including Carol’s Wedding dress. She also loved their Holstein dairy herd. She worked hand in hand with Lawrence, milking and raising the young stock of their herd. She loved all animals, often bringing orphaned birds, rabbits, kitties, injured piglets, and even baby mice into the house until they were ready to return outdoors. 

 

Claris is survived by four children; Guy (Cheree) Schurz, of Spencer, IA, Carol Vazquez of Gulfport, FL, Jane Schurz of Huntington, IN, Julie (Ron) Schurz Kohn of Huntertown, IN, three

grandchildren; Brian (Laura) Schurz of Carlisle, IA, Jason (Rene’) Orton Torres of Griffith, IN, Aaron Schurz of Spencer, IA, three great grandchildren; Hannah, Meghan, and Rebekah Schurz

of Carlisle, IA. Claris was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, her parents, 3 brothers; Otho, Royce, Frank, two sisters; Katie and Violet, two sons: John and Carl Schurz, and a grandson; Jeremiah Burns.

 

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4-7:00 P.M. on Friday April 8th, 2022 at the Soman-Larson Funeral home in Montfort, WI.

Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday

April 9, 2022 at Mifflin Cemetery.

In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial fund is being established in living memory of Claris E. Schurz.
