Bruce McDaniel Obituary

On Wednesday, April 15, 2020, the friendly cynic Bruce McDaniel, 71, proved to the world that he knew exactly when to fold ‘em by leaving us quietly in the middle of a global pandemic. He was surrounded by his family who spent many days caring for him and reliving countless memories made over the years.

Bruce, a Sean Connery look alike according to himself, was a 1966 graduate of Huntington High School, and retired from Dana Corporation, Fort Wayne. It could be possible that he had a bit of an inflated ego, but nevertheless, he had the kindest soul. He was lively and unique; an individual. He was the center of the room, generally the kitchen, wherever he went. Proving to always be quick with a joke. If you asked him about a former famous classmate, he would make sure to say that he knew how to spell the word “potato.” He never met a stranger and was so quick to make friends that he once managed to host a small party on a flight to California with people he’d known for less than eight hours. He was silly and enjoyed nothing more than bringing smiles to everyone’s face. He spent years making phone calls as Santa Clause every Christmas Eve to the children of the family. His quirks, such as answering the phone “Yellow,” will be remembered fondly.

Bruce found happiness in debating anyone in near proximity, enjoying a snack whenever it was offered, classic country music, MASH, Andy Griffith, Perry Mason, and spending time with his boisterous family.

Bruce was preceded in death by his mother (Mildred), father (Bruce) and two wives, Bren and Darlene. He is survived by his sister Pamela (Dale) Dopkins of Hampshire, IL, former wife and later friend Connie McDaniel and children Mark (April) McDaniel, Mollie (Tom) McDaniel Mowery, Andrew McDaniel, and Nikki (Matt Tumbleson) Barnes. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Preferred memorials are gifts to the Huntington County Baseball Association in care of McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.

His family will provide details regarding a memorial service for Bruce at a later date.
