Bart Allen Smart

Bart Allen Smart, 87, of Huntington, IN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at The Tipton House, Huntington, IN.

Mr. Smart was born on May 30, 1933, in Huntington, IN, to Bart A. and Olive (Roach) Smart.  His parents preceded him in death.  He married Carol Rose Schmitt on July 4, 1957, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.  She preceded him in death on December 7, 2000.   He then married Jessie (Warford) Keyser on May 6, 2006.  She survives and resides in Huntington.

Mr. Smart was a 1951 graduate of Lancaster High School.  He served in the United States Army in 1952.  After being a Crane Operator since he was 18 years old he retired from G & L Corporation.  He was a Union member for 68 years with IUOE Local 103, Fort Wayne, IN, a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a 1st Degree member of Knights of Columbus.

Along with his second wife, Jessie, he is survived by two sons, Ronald (Jackie) Smart, Lawrence (Kari) Smart, both of Huntington, IN; three daughters, Karen (Shane) Bickel, Susan (Jeffrey) Funk, Polly Smart, all of Huntington, IN; two step-sons, Gary (Sally) Keyser, Roger Keyser, both of Huntington, IN; one step-daughter, Susan K. Dinkel, WI; one brother, LeRoy (Nancy) Smart, Roanoke, IN; one sister, Mabel Weller, Howard, OH; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 16 step grandchildren and 31 step great grandchildren.

Along with his parents and first wife he was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Ann Smart; two step-sons, Mark Keyser, DeWayne ‘Dewie’ Keyser; one brother, Duane “Alex” Smart; and two sisters, Mary Reust and Marilyn Marzano.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 14, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry St., Huntington, IN, with Fr. Tony Steinacker presiding.

Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, IN.

In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to Huntington Catholic School in care of McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750.
